“An absolutely witty, swoon worthy behind the scenes romp! Delightful from beginning to end!”–Julie Murphy, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Dumplin’
Alexander Woodroe has it all. Charm. Sex appeal. Wealth. Fame. A starring role as Cupid on TV’s biggest show, Gods of the Gates. But the showrunners have wrecked his character, he’s dogged by old demons, and his post-show future remains uncertain. When all that reckless emotion explodes into a bar fight, the tabloids and public agree: his star is falling.
Enter Lauren Clegg, the former ER therapist hired to keep him in line. Compared to her previous work, watching over handsome but impulsive Alex shouldn’t be especially difficult. But the more time they spend together, the harder it gets to keep her professional remove and her heart intact, especially when she discovers the reasons behind his recklessness…not to mention his Cupid fanfiction habit.
When another scandal lands Alex in major hot water and costs Lauren her job, she’ll have to choose between protecting him and offering him what he really wants—her. But he’s determined to keep his improbably short, impossibly stubborn, and extremely endearing minder in his life any way he can. And on a road trip up the California coast together, he intends to show her exactly what a falling star will do to catch the woman he loves: anything at all.
Review:
This book. Honestly, writing this review is difficult because I honestly can’t put into words how much I loved this book. But I’ll do my best. Spoiler Alert was one of my top reads of last year and from the moment Alex stepped on the page, I knew I wanted his book. Even more so when Lauren was introduced and their pairing became clear. The original title for this book was Slow Burn and it’s definitely fitting with the story. Alex is a famous actor with a tendency to act before thinking. As the hit show he’s on is ending, one of the showrunners saddles him with Lauren, to act as a babysitter and to generally try to keep Alex out of trouble. Lauren is the showrunner’s cousin and a former ER therapist, a bit burned out and trying to figure out what to do next with her life. Initially off to a rock start, she and Alex just click. He’s impulsive, brash, hysterically and amazing caring. She’s methodical, calm, and thinks things through. They’re polar opposites and it works.
If you’ve read Spoiler Alert, you know a bit of the storyline with Alex’s job and that plays a big part in this book. As does, fandoms. Alex, very unhappy with the directions of Gods of the Gates, starts writing his own fanfic around his character. He’s especially joyful over including pegging! Lauren and Alex continue to spend time together and watching them fall in love and support one another is just everything. There’s adorable and funny moments with a road trip and only one bed! Even more than all of that, I just loved each character on their own and how much better they made the other person when they are together. This book is honestly everything I love about romance. It’s funny and sexy and at times, heartbreaking, and just so beautifully written. The characters are celebrated for who they are, flaws and all, and I finished the book feeling like I was just wrapped in the most perfect hug.
