Spence drew in a deep, shuddering breath that wasn’t much steadier than hers and pulled off his now crooked glasses. “Hang on a second.” He tossed them aside. “I need to check on something.”
“What?” she asked warily.
Once again he slowly drew her in, his eyes heated and focused on hers, infusing her with some of his calm. “I want to see if this is how it’s going to be.”
“How what’s going to be?” she whispered.
“This.”
His kiss started out just as slow and thoughtful as the first, all careful control. But when his tongue touched hers, control flew straight out the window.
Review:
Jill Shalvis has been an auto-buy author for me for a long time. Her Heartbreaker Bay series is one of my favorite. I was excited to see that Spence was finally getting a book. Colbie, the heroine, is a new character in the series. A famous author, she escapes from New York to California for a few weeks before Christmas to take a break from her crazy life. She has spent most of her time taking care of her family, all of whom could stand on their own, and needs a break from her book series as well. California, and Spence, who she meets on the first day, is the escape she needs.
Both Spence and Colbie have immense amounts of stress in their lives and it was great to see them both take a step back and have a break. What starts as a holiday friendship quickly leads to more and their relationship is both sweet and steamy. Add in the crazy couples from the previous books, and you have an enjoyable read. This book, which isn’t angsty, is the perfect holiday read to get you into the spirit of the season. While it wasn’t the best book in the series, I’m partial to the previous one, it was a hearwarming read!
